How to Care for Your Skin Before and After Microchanneling

Microchanneling has become a popular skincare treatment for its ability to improve skin texture, reduce wrinkles, and minimize scarring.

As someone who has undergone microchanneling, while the procedure itself is relatively straightforward, I believe that proper pre- and post-treatment care is crucial for optimal results and to minimize any potential side effects. After following the tips, I mention below, I was able to minimize any discomfort and maximize the benefits of the procedure. My skin felt smoother, firmer, and more radiant, and I noticed a significant reduction in fine lines and wrinkles.

Let’s see what all I did before and after my microchanneling procedure. First of all, you need to start with prepping your skin in advance.

Preparing Your Skin for Microchanneling

In the days leading up to your microchanneling appointment, it's essential to take steps to prepare your skin and ensure it's in the best possible condition for the procedure. Here are some key steps to follow:

1.     Avoid Sun Exposure: Excessive sun exposure can make your skin more sensitive and prone to irritation, so it's important to minimize sun exposure for at least a week before your appointment. If you have to go outside, wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen like the TruSkin Mineral Face Sunscreen which has an SPF of 30.

2.     Discontinue Certain Products: Avoid using any harsh skincare products, such as retinol, glycolic acid, or benzoyl peroxide, for at least a week before your appointment. These products can irritate the skin and make it more susceptible to adverse reactions during microchanneling.

3.     Hydrate and Moisturize: Proper hydration is essential for healthy skin, so make sure to drink plenty of water and keep your skin well-moisturized in the days leading up to your appointment. This will help your skin heal more effectively after the procedure. It is best to stick to gel-based moisturizers that do not cause acne. You can also go for oil-free options such as those made with vitamin E or other natural ingredients like aloe Vera gel which are known for their healing properties. I used the Neutrogena Hydro Boost Gel Cream from Walmart. It worked really well for my skin.

4.     Cleanse Thoroughly: The night before your appointment, cleanse your skin thoroughly with a gentle cleanser to remove any dirt, oil, or makeup. This will ensure a clean starting point for the procedure.

Post-Treatment Care for Your Skin

After your microchanneling procedure, it's equally important to follow proper skincare practices to promote healing and achieve the best possible results. Here are some essential post-treatment care tips:

1.     Avoid Touching the Treated Area: Resist the urge to touch or rub the treated area, as this can irritate and inflame the skin. Allow your skin to heal naturally.

2.     Keep the Area Clean: Wash the treated area gently with a mild cleanser twice daily. Avoid using harsh soaps or scrubbing, as this can disrupt the healing process.

3.     Moisturize Frequently: Keep your skin well-hydrated by applying a hydrating moisturizer to the treated area several times a day. This will help soothe and protect the skin as it heals.

4.     Protect from Sun Exposure: Continue to protect your skin from sun exposure for at least two weeks after the procedure. Wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher every day, even on cloudy days.

5.     Avoid Strenuous Activity: Avoid strenuous physical activity for at least a few days after the procedure, as this can increase inflammation and slow down healing.

6.     Observe the Changes in Your Skin: Pay attention to how your skin feels and adjust your skincare routine accordingly. If you experience any irritation or discomfort, consult your dermatologist for further guidance.

Microchanneling can be a transformative skin rejuvenation treatment, but it's crucial to approach it with the right preparation and care. By following these tips, you can set yourself up for success and achieve the beautiful, healthy skin you desire. And just in case you’re wondering, I got my microchanneling procedure done from SI Glam Glow Esthetics in New York. I hope this helps!
